Punishment for defamation in sura nur
Punishment for defamation in sura nur
The punishment for those who spread the false accusation against ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) is discussed in connection with the Ifk incident—the slander against her—in Surah An-Nur, verses 11–20.
The key distinction is between the Qur’anic condemnation of those who spread the slander and the specific legal punishment prescribed for false accusations of sexual misconduct in verse 4.
1. Qur’an 24:11 — Those who spread the slander
Allah says:
“Indeed, those who came with the falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what he earned of the sin, and the one who took upon himself the greater portion of it—for him is a great punishment.”
The verse establishes that:
Those who participated in spreading the false allegation incurred sin.
Each person bears responsibility for his or her own share.
The person who took the leading or greatest share bears a grave punishment.
The verse itself does not name every participant or specify a number of lashes in this passage.
2. Qur’an 24:4 — The prescribed worldly punishment
The verse prescribes 80 lashes for a person who accuses a chaste person of unlawful sexual intercourse and fails to produce four witnesses. It also addresses the acceptance of the person's testimony.
Thus, the specific false sexual allegation against ʿĀʾishah falls within the subject matter of this verse.
3. What punishment was actually imposed?
There is a relevant hadith in Sunan Ibn Mājah 2567. ʿĀʾishah herself reports that after her innocence was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ ordered the legal punishment for slander to be carried out on two men and one woman.
Traditional accounts identify the principal instigator as ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl, although historical reports differ in how they describe the participants and the punishment imposed on each.
4. The Qur'anic conclusion
The relevant passages establish three points:
24:4: The prescribed legal punishment for an unsupported accusation of sexual misconduct is 80 lashes.
24:11: Everyone involved bears responsibility for their share in spreading the slander, while the person who took the leading role faces a great punishment.
24:23: Allah condemns those who falsely accuse chaste, unsuspecting believing women and warns of a curse in this world and the Hereafter.
