Description of the Hereafter (Akhirah) in the Quran

The Akhirah (Hereafter) is a fundamental belief in Islam, emphasizing that life in this world is temporary, while the afterlife is eternal. The Quran vividly describes the stages of the Hereafter, including death, resurrection, judgment, Paradise (Jannah), and Hell (Jahannam). Below is a detailed description based on various Quranic verses.

1. The Temporary Nature of Worldly Life

  • The Quran constantly reminds us that this worldly life is short and a test.

  • Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64):
"And this worldly life is nothing but diversion and amusement. But the home of the Hereafter is indeed the eternal life, if only they knew."

  • Surah Al-Hadid (57:20):
"Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion, and adornment, and boasting to one another, and competition in wealth and children. But the Hereafter is far better and more lasting."

2. The Moment of Death

  • At the moment of death, angels take the soul, either with peace (for believers) or with punishment (for disbelievers).

  • Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56:83-87):
"Then why, when the soul reaches the throat, and you are at that moment looking on—but We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see—then why, if you are not to be recompensed, do you not bring it back, if you should be truthful?"

  • Surah An-Nazi'at (79:1-2):
"By those [angels] who extract [the soul] with violence, and by those who gently take it out."

3. The Life of the Grave (Barzakh)

  • After death, the soul enters the realm of Barzakh (the intermediate state).

  • Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:99-100):
"Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.' No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected."

  • For the righteous, the grave is peaceful, while for sinners, it is a place of torment.

4. The Resurrection (Ba’th) and Gathering (Hashr)

  • On the Day of Judgment, every person will be resurrected from their grave.

  • Surah Yasin (36:51-52):
"And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten. They will say, 'O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?'"

  • Surah Al-Hajj (22:7):
"And that the Hour will come—there is no doubt about it—and that Allah will resurrect those in the graves."

  • People will be gathered in a vast plain, awaiting judgment.

  • Surah Al-Kahf (18:47):
"And We will gather them all together, leaving not one of them behind."

5. The Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah)

  • The Day of Judgment will be a day of intense fear and regret for wrongdoers.

  • Surah Al-Ma’arij (70:8-10):
"The Day the sky will be like murky oil, and the mountains will be like wool, and no friend will ask [anything of] a friend."

  • People’s deeds will be weighed on a scale (Mizan).

  • Surah Al-Qari'ah (101:6-9):
"Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], he will be in a pleasant life. But as for one whose scales are light, his refuge will be an abyss."

  • Every person will receive their record of deeds:

    • In the right hand (for the righteous).
    • In the left hand (for the wicked).
  • Surah Al-Inshiqaq (84:7-12):
"As for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will be judged with an easy account and return to his people in happiness. But as for he who is given his record behind his back, he will cry out for destruction."

6. The Bridge Over Hell (As-Sirat)

  • Every person must cross the bridge (Sirat) that stretches over Hell.

  • Surah Maryam (19:71-72):
"And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees."

  • The righteous will pass easily, while the sinful may fall into Hell.

7. Final Destination: Paradise (Jannah) or Hell (Jahannam)

A. Jannah – The Eternal Reward for the Righteous

  • Jannah is a place of eternal joy and bliss for the believers.

  • Surah Al-Zumar (39:73-74):
"And those who feared their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups... and they will say, 'Praise be to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land that we may settle in Paradise wherever we will.'"

  • Surah Al-Ra’d (13:23-24):
"Gardens of perpetual residence, which they will enter with their righteous fathers, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate [saying], 'Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.'"

B. Jahannam – The Eternal Punishment for Disbelievers

  • Jahannam is a place of severe torment for those who rejected the truth.

  • Surah Al-Nisa (4:56):
"Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses—We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with new skins so they may taste the punishment."

  • Surah Al-Humazah (104:6-9):
"It is the Fire of Allah, [eternally] fueled, which mounts directed at the hearts. Indeed, it [Hell] will be closed down upon them, in extended columns."

8. The Ultimate Reward – Seeing Allah (SWT)

  • The greatest reward in the Hereafter is seeing the face of Allah.

  • Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:22-23):
"Some faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord."

  • The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The people of Paradise will not be given anything more beloved to them than looking at the face of their Lord." (Sahih Muslim)

Conclusion

The Hereafter (Akhirah) is the ultimate reality in Islam. The Quran describes life after death as:

  1. Temporary worldly life
  2. Death and the grave (Barzakh)
  3. Resurrection and Judgment Day
  4. Crossing the Sirat (Bridge over Hell)
  5. Eternal destination: Paradise (Jannah) or Hell (Jahannam)

The Quran urges faith, righteousness, and repentance to attain Allah’s mercy and enter Jannah, while warning against sin and disbelief that lead to Jahannam.
