Fasting or Siam is the way of attaining nearness to Allah

Fasting, known as Sawm in Islam, is indeed one of the fundamental acts of worship and a means of attaining nearness to Allah (God). It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and holds great spiritual significance. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world fast from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib), abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs as a form of devotion and self-discipline.

The primary purpose of fasting is to develop taqwa (God-consciousness), as mentioned in the Quran:

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (achieve taqwa)."
(Quran 2:183)

Fasting is not merely about abstaining from physical needs; it is also about purifying the soul, refraining from negative behaviors such as lying, backbiting, and anger, and increasing acts of worship like prayer, charity, and recitation of the Quran. It is a time for self-reflection, gratitude, and seeking forgiveness.

Through fasting, Muslims learn patience, empathy for the less fortunate, and a deeper connection with Allah. It is a spiritual journey that strengthens faith and reminds believers of their ultimate purpose in life—to worship and seek the pleasure of Allah.

In addition to the obligatory fasts of Ramadan, Muslims may also observe voluntary fasts throughout the year (e.g., on Mondays and Thursdays, the Day of Arafah, or the white days of each lunar month) to further draw closer to Allah and gain additional rewards.
